First Reef Survey For 2008.....
ReefFriends conducted the first reef survey/check for 2008 at Kusu last Saturday. Even though it was a small team of five (including two OJTs), we still managed to finish the survey (including Fish and Invert) on time!.....All thanks to Jeff for covering all three survey for the shallow transect! :o)
Yan & I was assigned to do the deep transect and so we shared the workload of the Line-Intercept Transect(LIT). The vis was a good 4m but the surges were still terrible at Kusu.
This time round, we also tried identifying the corals to their genus besides recording the lifeforms. Tried my best but I am still confused with some of the corals! So pics were taken. Anyone would like to help???? :o)
After surface interval, we proceed to do the Fish and Invert surveys at the deep transect. Was doing the Invert survey and now I know why HB said she was seeing stars in her dream after last year survey. There were just too many Featherstars to count!
Many, many of them on the Sea Fans!!! Yellow, Brown, Black and a RED one too!
Other than Featherstars on the Sea Fans, there's also lots of Brittlestars on them too!
A few Flatworm and Nudibranch were also recorded.
At Kusu, you won't miss out the False Clown Anemonefish and the Anemones cos they are just everywhere.
Towards the end of the dive, Jeff also shows me this Bubble coral shrimp!
And how lucky we are that we also managed to finish the survey before a rainstorm hit us!

Whee! Did you get a new camera? The water and the pictures look very nice.
The two top right corals look like Podabacia. Bottom right is Hydnophora. Top left is one of the Favids. Below that looks like Echinophyllia. And then the other one I really cannot tell from the picture. Psammocora, possibly?
Haha. Quite fun to try to remember the genera names, actually. Haven't thought about them in quite awhile now.
Keep up the updates! :)
Hi Wai,
Thanks! Thanks! for the coral IDs!
Yup, got a new camera. But it's much more bulky than the one that got away. So still trying to get used to it. As you can see some of the pics are OOF. :p
